Welcome to the Pleasant Valley High Ski & Snowboard Racing Team! We are excited that you are interested in knowing more about the team.
We are an alpine racing team that competes in the CNISSF High School League. Skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels are welcome to join. If you're a beginner, please reach out to Coach Walt for information on available training programs.
Training Schedule
Dry-land conditioning takes place at PV High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, from November through February.
On-hill gate training is held on Saturdays at Boreal with the Alpine Ski Club.
Races are hosted at various North Tahoe resorts, including Boreal, Alpine Meadows, and Northstar. Races are typically scheduled on Mondays and/or Fridays during January and February.
State Championships
Athletes who qualify will compete in the state championships, usually held during the first week of March.
On-Hill Training with Auburn Ski Club and Boreal Season Pass
To help manage costs, our team partners with Auburn Ski Club for a separate training program. This program includes 7 days of gate training ($385) and a discounted season pass to Boreal Resort ($260). Total cost for the 2024-2025 season is $645.
About Our Team
Our team is a recognized varsity sport at PV High School, but we operate as a "self-funded" program. While we have full support from the school and district, no financial assistance is provided. To cover expenses, we rely heavily on our dedicated group of parents, who lead fundraising efforts and volunteer support.
Fundraising Efforts
We raise money through various fundraisers, including the Almond Bowl Car Raffle, Ski Swap, team apparel sales, and other events. These funds help cover coaching fees, league dues, race fees, and other essential costs. Additionally, all parents are strongly encouraged to contribute volunteer hours throughout the year to ensure our program continues to receive the necessary funding.
The GroupMe app is our primary communication tool for the Ski/Snowboard Team. Please download the app to your phone. Both athletes and parents will receive an invitation to join the team’s group.
All important updates, including event details and last-minute race cancellations due to weather, will be shared through the app. If you encounter any issues, please contact Wes Metroka, Carly Metroka, or Trent Lattin for assistance.
Overnight stays are optional. The drive from Chico to Boreal takes just over two hours. Families who choose to stay overnight have several accommodation options. Some rent or lease homes in the Tahoe area, while others opt for hotels or Airbnb rentals in nearby locations such as Truckee, Reno (45 minutes from Boreal), or Boomtown (30 minutes from Boreal).
Parents are responsible for providing all transportation for their athlete to and from the mountain on race and practice days. If you are unable to drive your athlete to an event, open the team Ride Board, find the date of the event on the bottom page tabs, and look for a car with an open slot (without an N/A). If an open slot is found, contact that parent on their listed phone number and coordinate the ride.
While a parent volunteer helps coordinate carpooling, ultimately it remains each parent’s responsibility to ensure their racer gets to the mountain.
Gear can be purchased from any retailer. The team hosts a ski swap at the beginning of the school year, and we keep students informed about other ski swaps or sales throughout the fall. Used equipment is acceptable, and returning racers often have extra gear or know of available options.
Coaches will go over clothing and gear requirements at a team meeting. In Chico, Hughes Ski Hut sells both ski and snowboard equipment. We also have some equipment available from past racers.
Absolutely! There is always an area at the base of the race-course for spectators. It may be a bit of a hike, but well worth it to see our racers fly through the finish line. There are also live video feeds online at certain resorts. Boreal and Alpine Meadows both have a live camera. Links to the camera are on the website race info page.
